Perfection not required!
I often hear people say that they tried spinning yarn but they were really bad at it. Thanks to Facebook always showing me old pictures behold my first kettle dying experiment with some of my first yarn spun on my original wheel. It was clearly pretty terrible. I had a blast making it though. My best advice is when you first start out just be really really excited that you made anything that remotely resembles yarn and just have a really good time doing it. If you just keep messing around and experimenting with stuff you’ll learn how to do all sorts of things and you will eventually find your groove. Come hang out with spinners if all levels in our Facebook group.
One thing that really kind of puts me off in most things but unfortunately also the “arts or crafts” world is this constant push to do it “ perfectly” or not at all. I hear so many people who tell me they tried knitting or spinning but they just weren’t good at it so they stoped. There usually some story about how they enjoyed picking out the supplies but they were then intimidated by the learning process because everything they saw getting made at the yarn shop or art class was so much better than they felt like they could do so they just felt bad about themselves and stoped. Of course if you’re heart isn’t in something don’t force yourself to do it but if it’s something that tickles your brain and makes you happy then do the damn thing anyway!
I started out as a knitter and the first sweater pattern I ever made was actually knit in flat pieces not in the round and then you had to sew it all together. I spent like a year in collage working on this thing in scratchy teal yarn in between exams and house parties and then when it came time to sew it all together I somehow got the arms sewn on upside down because I had no clue what I was doing. I later found this monstrosity of a sweater when unpacking our house in WA state years later and laughed and laughed at how it looked like bat wings. I’m pretty sure it got tossed out but it was the motivation I needed years later to get back into knitting and the rest as they say is history! I mean I’m the fearless leader of this group and I’m definitely still learning how to do things better. Keep having fun and enjoying what you’re making. I willing to guess that your crafting has a lot more to do with lighting up your world and bringing you happiness than being some perfect finished object anyway and that’s exactly perfect to me.
